Cooling Chinese Sugar Cane Drink

>> Sep 16, 2011

As the weather is not easing up with hot dry spells and occasionally granted some scattered rain in the afternoons and some hazy days, my good neighbour, Popo J gave us some Sugar Cane (In Cantonese, “Chook-Cheh”) from her garden to boil to cool down our bodies.

Hot Hot Hot

>> May 4, 2010

Spring brings hot-hot-hot weather… and it’s not even summer really, there are some thunderstorms in the late afternoons which provides some reliefs but at times the humidity level can be quite unbearable!

The average day temperature is on the high of 32-37°C. Getting a tan is not a problem here! Haha… Snow White I’m not but I’d rather stay indoors with the air-con full-blast…and preferably a tall glass of refreshing fruit juice with ice cubes filled to the brim!

But, I still remember my Mom’s words that drinking ice-cool drinks will make one feel warmer, an after-effect, actually. So, it is advisable to consume ‘leong-cha’ or cooling herbal tea.

I made this soothing sweet drink to keep our throat moist in this hot weather.

100g Dried dates (dried candied dates, )
100g (In Cantonese, “Fung thong” or )

Just boil the above with 2 litres of water for 15-20 mins, cool and serve. It can be served a 'tong sui"

Enjoy....

Sunshine Orange Smoothies

>> Oct 31, 2009

Grabs some oranges, apples and banana from your fruit-basket if you have them and start making yummy snacks for your little one. It’s packed with Vitamin C, essential minerals & anti-oxidants and good for warding off H1N1 and seasonal ‘flu.

I read somewhere or was it Dr Lester Packer’s “The Antioxidant Miracles” (sorry, I can’t remember) that Vitamin C cannot cure ‘flu but rather help ward off and speed up recovery.

2 oranges, peeled
1 red apple, peeled and cored
2 green apples, peeled and cored
1 ripe banana, peeled, of course
1 tsp honey (optional)
4 ice-cubes
(Serves : 3)

Put all the fruit pieces in the blender, blend it all. Lastly add in the ice cubes and press “ice crush” button and you get your slushy Sunshine Orange Smoothies.

If your little one is not fond of fruits, you might want to try this. Serve the Smoothies in fancy tall plastic tumbler with Mickey Mouse cartoon or Transformer (or Ben-10 which is currently Max’s favourite), complete with coloured straw. Here, I used McDonald's latest Coca Cola Glass tumblers.

Cool Red Smoothies

>> Oct 9, 2009

Fancy a sweet, juicy, thirst-quencher smoothies packed with fiber, Vitamins and anit-oxidants ? All it takes is just 10 minutes and a blender with watermelon, apples and oranges.

A diet with high intakes of vitamin C and beta-carotene have been shown in a number of scientific studies to reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce the airway spasm that occurs in asthma, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and alleviate some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

A cup of watermelon provides 24.3% of the daily value for vitamin C, and, through its beta-carotene, 11.1% of the DV for vitamin A.

Watermelon has very high water content of 92% and the red flesh watermelon is also a source of the potent carotenoid antioxidant, lycopene, found to be protective against a growing list of cancers.

Watermelons are in nature an excellent source of vitamins B6 and B1. They are also a great source of potassium, magnesium and extremely low in sodium. Watermelons makes great snack for both children and adults, for the reason that they contain practically no fat. The good news is also that it is not a commonly allergenic food.

Apple is a good source of dietary fiber, although I’ve chosen to peel these apples due to pesticides residues and wax-coating, unless you opted for the organically grown. So much of the fiber, Vitamin C, anti-oxidant and flavonoids are found in the skin and pulp. Anti-oxidants and Flavonoids play a significant role in lowering heart-disease risks, regulate blood pressure, prevent unwanted inflammation, protect against cancer and help regulate over-production of fats in the liver.

There’s the Granny Smith, Royal Gala, Honey or Fuji available here. Apples may seem common and sold through-out the year but of different varieties & origin. So, don’t forget to include these anti-oxidant packed fruits in your weekly diet.

Orange is an excellent source of Vitamin C. Just one orange supplies 116.2% of the daily value for vitamin C (Wow!). Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body, disarming free radicals and preventing damage in the aqueous environment both inside and outside cells. Inside cells, a potential result of free radical damage to DNA is cancer. Especially in areas of the body where cellular turnover is especially rapid, such as the digestive system, preventing DNA mutations translates into preventing cancer. This is why a good intake of vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.

Orange is high in fiber, and has been known to lower cholesterol, thue helping to prevent atherosclerosis. An orange has over 170 different phytonutrients and more than 60 flavonoids, many of which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and blood clot inhibiting properties, as well as strong antioxidant effects. In addition to oranges' phytonutrients, vitamin C and fiber, they are a good source of thiamin, folate, Vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), potassium and calcium.

Scientific research can boast all they want on the nutritional benefits of these fruits but I do noticed the radiant and youthful complexions of people who regularly consume a diet high in fiber and Vitamin C…(chuckling)…I’m gonna make sure I include lots of these in my diet from now on… as age is catching up!

Cincau jelly in soy bean milk drink

>> Sep 19, 2009

This is a very common drink in Malaysia.

In the holy month of Ramadhan, that’s when Muslims here break fast, a glass of chilled soy bean milk with grass jelly added or cincau syrup drink is much welcome at the end of a day, after a day of fasting. The cincau (grass jelly) that is black in colour is served in many restaurants and food-stalls in ABC (air batu campur, ais kacang or ice kacang or shaved ice served with red beans, syrup, milk, corn and cincau), cendol or cincau drink.
